Six Common Causes for Water Loss

9/26/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage Restoration

While even clean water can be damaging and require the need for water damage restoration services, it’s reassuring to know that unwanted water in your building is not contaminated or unsafe to handle.

Here are six common causes of water loss, that are considered Category 1 water.

Broken Supply Line

Supply lines can start to leak around fittings and connections, or a sharp object can cause a supply line: broken pipe to break completely and start to gush out. Deterioration, freezing temperatures, and earthquakes can also can a water line to break.

Cracked or Broken Pipe

Broken pipes are a common cause of water damage. While an undetected leak that has been sitting for a long period time is likely contaminated, a recent pipe burst is a clean water source.

Overflowing Sink or Tub

If a sink or tub is accidentally left leaking or a drain is plugged, water can overflow and cause extensive damage. As long as there were no contaminants in the sink or tub, this water is considered Category 1.

Clean Toilet Bowls

An overflowing toilet with no urine or feces in it is still considered clean water. If only urine is present, the water is labeled Category 2. Water with feces is grossly contaminated Category 3 water.

Melted Ice or Snow and Rainwater.

As long as it hasn’t come into contact with contaminants, water from melted ice or snow is safe to handle. Additionally, rainwater is considered clean enough to touch and even consume.

Appliance Malfunction

While water that leaks from a dishwasher or washing machine may be slightly contaminated, other appliance leaks are considered safe. However, you will need to be careful to avoid electrical hazards.

A positive sign that floodwater in your building is Category 1 is that it came from a clean water source. While there are other potential causes of flooding or leaks, these water sources are some of the most common.

3 Ways To Maintain Your Business's Roof

A roof leak or collapse can be devastating to a business

3 Ways To Maintain Your Business's Roof

A roof leak or collapse can be devastating to a business, causing flooding and ruining merchandise. Roof damage, in fact, is a difficult situation, making reopening your store a hassle and expense. Avoiding this disaster isn't impossible, but steps can be taken to minimize the chances.

  1. Attend to Small Problems Quickly
Don't assume your structure is intact simply because you can't see water stains. Wind damage and harsh rain can wear it down, causing tiny complications. Contact roofing specialists to conduct biannual evaluations, looking for any of the following issues:
  • Peeled edges
  • Cracked roofing
  • Missing shingles
  • Flashing issues

Leaving any of these unattended exposes the building to leaks and water damage. Fix things as soon as they come to your attention.

  1. Tend To Drainage and Debris Early
Are gutters clear? If they become clogged, backups happen, allowing water to build in areas it shouldn't. This pressure could add unneeded pressure to the top, essentially weighing it down. That collapse is not pretty. Have property management look at the gutter system regularly, scheduling clean outs. Trees and brush become an additional hazard. Roof damage often happens when limbs and branches are picked up during storms and then thrown into the roofing. Those smacks punch holes and remove the protective shingles. To avoid this, have someone trim the foliage and, before a major weather event, pick up anything loose on the ground.
  2. Apply To Insurance Immediately
If you need help restoring the premises, contact a water restoration company to inspect the establishment, looking for mold and flooding complications. Their recommendation may indicate a roof rebuild is needed. Don't underestimate that decision. Work with your insurance company to discuss the need, giving you the comfort of a secure new ceiling. In fact, ask about waterproofing for the future. This sealant might aid in keeping leaks from sprouting up in the future.
Roof damage has preventative measures. By looking at it periodically, management might find the weak areas, offering a chance to stop a major catastrophe. In addition, don't forget that taking care of the landscaping may also ward off potential troubles.

Where to start restoration after a fire in your commercial property.

9/26/2022 (Permalink)

Fire cleanup should start as soon as it's safe to re-enter your building

A fire affects your business in many ways, bringing your daily operations to a halt and causing financial losses due to damage and sometimes even theft or vandalism at your commercial property.

The right information and preparation can help you take the correct steps to minimize those problems. Fire cleanup should start as soon as it's safe to re-enter your building.

What To Expect

There may be serious damages in your building that extend beyond the reach of the flames. You should watch for the following issues:

  • Water and chemicals may have deteriorated equipment and furnishings.
  • Firefighters may have cut holes in the walls and ceiling to find hidden flames.
  • Smoke damage could have stained paint and seeped into the walls, ceilings, and floors.

How Repairs Begin

In many instances of after a fire damage, roof repair is the first step in securing your business and preventing further damages as apart of the restoration procedure. This is because the roof has often been harmed by the blaze itself, the water used to put out the flames, and the holes made by firefighters. Why would professionals cut into the roof? As flares burn, they move quickly up, across and down. Firefighters create openings in the roof to provide ventilation, getting rid of the thick black smoke that makes it hard to see. This slows the progress of the fire and ultimately increases the respondents’ ability to save your property from complete ruin.

When fire remediation professionals arrive, they may begin with tarp services to protect the rest of your building and possessions from further damages. Putting a tarp on the roof to cover holes can keep rain, debris, and pests out of your building.

Who To Contact

Much of the work to repair and restore your property can be handled by fire remediation professionals. Fire cleanup services generally include restoration from flames, smoke, water, and chemicals. Roof repairs are often some of the first steps professionals take. Your prompt decision to involve these experts may reduce the extent of damages.

Air Ducts, When Was Yours Cleaned?

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Paris professionals routinely inspects the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC)

According to the EPA:

You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if-

  • There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
  • There is an odd smell coming from the Duct system.
  • Ducts are infested with vermin, e.g. (rodents or insects)
  • Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.

Some research also suggests that cleaning dirty cooling coils, fans and heat exchangers can improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems.

Is cleaning my air ducts really that important?

During normal operation, dust can accumulate in ductwork that can lead to microbial growth. Duct cleaning has been shown to reduce this growth, as well as increase the efficiency of your system. In fact, in some cases of extreme buildup, it can increase efficiency as much as 40 percent!

SERVPRO of Paris professionals routinely inspects the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can, in turn, save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

Water Damages rarely wait for when it's convenient. When is the most inconvenient? Vacation.

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO OF PARIS HELPING TO MAKE WATER DAMAGE “Like it never even happened.”

The last thing that should be on your mind when you’re on vacation is whether a broken pipe or water heater bust has flooded your home. This can cause damage to your belongings and your home, so the best thing is prevention.

Prevent Damage

One of the main causes of water damages is the water heater.  It’s a good idea to shut it off.  If a pipe breaks or the valve gives, hot water will flood the home, and water will continue to fill the tank and leak out of whatever gave way. Other appliances generally won’t leak unless in use.

If leaving the home during winter, turn the heat down but not so low that pipes can freeze.  Keep the water running at a drip to prevent freezing.

Wrap the pipes.  Exposed pipes can always use the extra insulation from the elements.

Keep an Eye on Your Home

If you’re going to be gone for several days, it’s not a bad idea to have a neighbor, family member or friend stop by the house once in a while. This can be just a quick peek inside to verify there is no flooding, a broken pipe, or any other issues.

You can also use web cameras that can be viewed from a phone or computer to check on your home. This won’t prevent a pipe from bursting, or a flood but it can allow you to at least get a professional there sooner and prevent further water damage.

Tornado Damage and Your Home

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Tree uprooted by a tornado

Tornadoes are a terrifying, often devastating, weather event.

They can turn houses into dust, and flip lives upside down. Living through a tornado can be traumatizing, and sometimes the aftermath is just as bad. Parts of your home may be destroyed, and the idea of fixing it can be overwhelming. Recovering from a tornado could be a huge task, depending on how bad the damage was. However, there are steps to take toward recovery and people ready to help along the way. There are steps that should be taken right after the storm passes, and other steps to take down the road when it is time for repairs and cleaning.

Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones

The first step is to stay in your safe place until the storm has completely passed. If you are able, try and wait until you get the all clear from local officials. After the storm, check yourself and those with you for any injuries. If someone is hurt, the next step is seeking out first aid. After everyone has been checked and is okay, you should see how bad the damage to your house is. Make sure to watch out for anything that is unstable and likely to fall. If you go outside, look out for any downed power lines. They can be life threatening, so if you see downed power lines stay inside.

Protect Your Property

After you make sure yourself and your loved ones are protected, start protecting your property. You can make temporary repairs in order to prevent further damage. Many insurance companies will reimburse you for the cost, so make sure to keep receipts just in case. In addition to temporary repairs, living expenses may also be reimbursable. If your house is damaged to the point of you having to stay in a hotel, keep the receipts. Your policy may pay you back for the cost of it. Make sure to make a list of anything that was damaged, and don’t throw out damaged belongings. An adjuster will need to assess them for value if your policy covers replacing them. You should also inspect all utility lines and appliances. Any damage could lead to a gas leak or electric shortage. Damaged electric wires may also cause a fire. You may even have to turn off the main valve in order to prevent more harm to your house. Once these steps have been taken, contact your insurance company. From there, they can work with you to see what your policy covers. Most of the time, they will hire services to come out and repair damages.

The Need for an Emergency Plan

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Make sure you and your loved ones have a PLAN!

Flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and blizzards are natural disasters that can threaten your home, business and community. Your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals want you and your customers to be aware of the steps to take to help prepare for Mother Nature's worst.

Right now is the perfect opportunity to review your emergency plan. Emergencies can happen unexpectedly in communities just like yours, to people just like you. Tornado outbreaks, river floods, flash floods, historic earthquakes, and even water main breaks and power outages in U.S. cities affecting millions of people for days at a time.

The more you know about what to do in an emergency, the more confident and secure you will feel in your abilities to manage through a disaster. Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it is a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. Cooking Fires

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Cooking is the main cause for home fires and injuries.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the main cause for home fires and injuries, with Thanksgiving and Christmas being the peak days for cooking-related fires.  Review the following safety tips to help ensure you enjoy a safe holiday.

  • Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  • Never leave cooking food unattended- stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food.  If someone must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, they should turn off the stove.
  • Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking.  Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
  • Keep the kids away from the cooking area.  Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove.
  • Keep anything flammable- pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains- away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.
  • Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen.  Contact the local fire department to take training on the proper use of extinguishers.
  • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off.
  • Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen, on each level of the home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms.  Use the test button to check it each month.  Replace all batteries at least once a year.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Paris has the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Paris will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What's in Flood Water

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Paris deals with flood damage so that you don't have to.

Contaminated Flood Waters Contain Pathogens and Dangerous Debris

When we respond to a case of flood damage due to a storm, one of the most frequent questions our technicians get is, "What is black water?", Black water is heavily contaminated water which is not only unsafe to drink but can also be hazardous simply to be around. It can be difficult to judge conditions in black water due to its typical gray, brown, or black coloration, with small particles often hiding potentially far greater hazards lying within. Here are a few things that can be found in a typical sample of black flood water.

Dirt and Soil: Typically, most of the coloration in black water comes from dirt and soil trapped within. Many cases of flood damage result from heavy storms and rain, and these floodwaters more often than not pick up significant amounts of soil before they ever reach a home. Although this dirt may sound harmless, it, in reality, makes the water much heavier and more difficult to navigate if you get caught in it.

Microorganisms in Black Water: Although the amount and type of organisms in flood can vary depending on its causes and specifics, almost all samples of black water contain very high levels of microorganisms. These may be parasites, bacteria, viruses, mold, or many other types of organism, and they may be able to cause health effects if ingested or absorbed through the skin. This is why it is never advised to drink flood waters and to seek medical attention immediately if you have.

Sharp Metal and Glass: It can be very difficult to see sharp objects in a mass of floodwater, but even if you feel you are confident that such materials are not in the water, it is best always to assume they are. Sharp materials, even if they are tiny, often constitute one of the water's greatest risks. If they open up a small cut or wound, this spot may go unnoticed by you but later on can possibly develop a bad infection. If you have been cut or had black water touch an open wound, immediately disinfect the wound and apply medical aid as needed.

SERVPRO of Paris deals with flood damage so that you don't have to. If your home has been caught in a flood, call us at (903)784-2700 for mitigation and restoration services.

Why Should I Call Professionals for Water Cleanup and Restoration?

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

After your home suffers water damage, you need a team of professionals to assist you with cleanup. Call SERVPRO of Paris right away!

SERVPRO of Paris Offers 24/7 Emergency Services to Handle Your Water Damage and  Restoration Needs

A sudden water intrusion like a leaking pipe or the breakdown of your water heater can be a sizable inconvenience. However, this inconvenience turns into a substantial loss if not addressed quickly and using the right methods. Hiring trained water restoration technicians (WRT) to come to your home helps you limit the loss and get your home back to normal faster than DIY methods alone.

What is SERVPRO’s Response Plan for Water Damage?

Whenever we get called for water damage restoration we formulate a plan based on any combination of methods to help us:

  • Minimize the need for demolition
  • Repair or restore rather than replace
  • Create an optimum atmosphere for drying, such as closed drying systems
  • Expedite restoration to have you back to your routine fast

How is the Need for Demolition Determined?

With many water removal project demolition is required to remove any wet structural components or wall materials. Controlled or partial demolition efforts allow us to remove and replace just a portion of the materials to have it finished off to match the preloss condition. Our team always uses a variety of non-invasive techniques to ensure no moisture is left behind, including:

  • Moisture sensors
  • Moisture detectors
  • Thermal cameras

Of course, whenever your interior has standing water, we use extraction tools and a combination of methods to facilitate faster removal. Some of the standard options our SERVPRO technicians will use include:

  • Submersible pumps
  • High-powered extractors
  • Draining any trapped water behind walls using bore-holes
  • Mopping
  • Wet-Vac, and more

Why Should I Have SERVPRO of Paris Restore My Carpets?

We are well-versed in best practices for restoring carpeting impacted by water loss within the home. Upon arrival and formulation of our restoration plan, we inspect your carpeting and select the best equipment and methods to achieve our goals. The process includes:

  • Inspecting carpeting using moisture probe technology – this allows us to determine how deep the moisture has embedded into the carpet and the pad below.
  • Detachment of the carpet with the proper tools so our technicians can further inspect to see if the carpet has delaminated or mold has begun to colonize.
  • In cases where the water has not infiltrated the carpet pad or the subfloor below, we may use centrifugal air movers to float the carpet, thus allowing warm air to circulate beneath.
  • In cases where water moisture saturates the carpet fully, we will remove the padding below and dispose of it to be replaced after the drying of the zone is complete.

In general, carpet detachment is the fastest way to facilitate drying as it allows air to flow underneath. However, we have some in-place drying methods that will enable us to achieve drying goals without detachment. This may involve using a weighted extractor, or rover, that works from the perimeter inward while drying. In-place drying is ideal when moisture has not made it all the way down to the carpet padding.

Why is Professional Restoration Better Than DIY?

What many homeowners may not realize is that there does not have to be extensive water damage for it to add up to an immense loss. There could be hidden moisture left behind in wall cavities and other tight spots that make it difficult for DIY methods to get the job done. SERVPRO features IICRC-certified technicians that have the choice between two distinct systems to ensure your home is back to appropriate humidity levels. These systems include:

  • Open Drying System – This works by using outside air to speed up the drying of the impacted area. Warmer months allow us to use an open system for active, time-efficient drying. This method helps to promote evaporation while using equipment like air-movers and box fans to exchange evaporated moisture with drier outside air. We can do this by opening up doors and windows in conjunction with a centrifugal motion to create fluid air movement.

• Closed Drying System – This system works by using dehumidification equipment within a concentrated drying zone for air exchange. Such a method is excellent during times of the year when temperatures are lower, and access to the outdoors is limited. This works on the same principle, yet a closed system gives more control of the temperatures. Higher temps mean the air holds more moisture, and drying is faster. We also use desiccant dehumidifiers within the work zone for moisture removal and to thwart the potential for mold growth.

If a Disaster Strikes, Will You Be Ready?

  • Develop and test emergency communication plans with your family.
  • Assemble or update your emergency supplies.
  • Learn about local hazards in our  city, and conduct drills to practice emergency response actions.
  • Participate in a preparedness discussion, training, or class.
  • Collect and safeguard critical documents.
  • Plan with neighbors to help each other and share resources.
  • Document property and obtain appropriate insurance for relevant hazards.
  • Make property improvements to reduce potential injury and property damage.

Stay away from floodwaters - Turn around don't drown

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.

There is always potential for flood damage no matter where you live. According to the American Red Cross floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:

- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.

- If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood occurs and affects you, call SERVPRO of Paris 903-784-2700.  Even minor floods have potential to cause major damage. We are faster to ANY size disaster. Let us help you get your life back in order.

Circumstances for a Flood Cut

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

A flood cut can prevent this and keep mold at bay.

When flooding affects your home our technicians may perform a technique called a "flood cut".

This specific technique requires cutting out sections of drywall about a foot above the flood line to inspect the wall behind it. While this process is not always necessary, there are a few circumstances that may require it after a flood occurs.

  1. Black Water Floods

When outdoor flooding invades your home from overflowing streams or rivers, it may contain sewage, chemicals or dead animal carcasses. This water can be considered contaminated and is known as black water. A flood cut is usually necessary when this type of flooding occurs because your home’s drywall and any insulation behind it may be affected by the dirty water and may need replacing.

  1. Wet Insulation

Flood technicians may perform a flood cut and tear out sections of drywall if they believe any insulation behind your home’s walls has water damage. Because insulation cannot be properly dried, a flood cut may be needed to remove any wet material. Once the interior wall is cleaned and dried, new insulation can be installed.

  1. Mold Growth

After flooding, mold can begin to grow behind interior walls and spread quickly if it is not addressed. Flood technicians may perform a flood cut to check for mold and treat the area if any is found. Because mold does not need sunlight to grow, it can spread from interior walls to other areas and cause an unpleasant odor in your home. A flood cut can prevent this and keep mold at bay.

We know summer is filled with backyard barbecues, parades, and fireworks displays, but did you know that more fires are reported on the 4th of July than any other day of the year?

Each year, fireworks cause on average 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and nearly 17,000 other fires, including grass fires, explosions, and even people have been engulfed in flames during a seemingly innocent childhood tradition.

Before preparing your personal fireworks display, check which fireworks are legal in your area and that there is no burn-ban in affect.

Below is a list of fireworks that may be legal for purchase in your area:

  • Sparklers
  • Bottle Rockets
  • Firecrackers (Fireworks designed to explode on the ground.)
  • Roman Candles

Fireworks Safety Tips

SERVPRO is on call 24/7 for emergency fire damages, but of course, we would rather you avoid the fire hazard all together for your safety and those around you! Check out what the pro’s have to say about using fireworks safely:

  • NEVER use fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Do not allow young children to handle fireworks. Have an adult supervise them closely and light the fireworks for them.
  • NEVER light fireworks indoors, not even sparklers! People often do not realize that common sparklers burn around 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Do not try to re-light or handle fireworks that did not ignite properly. It may seem like a “dud”, but the malfunction could cause an explosion you are not prepared for.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that have malfunctioned or have been used before discarding them in a trashcan.
  • When lighting a firework, do not place your head or body over the projectile.

The Potential Causes for Electrical Fires

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Most electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets and or old, outdated appliances.

Most electrical fires are caused by faulty electrical outlets and or old, outdated appliances. The following are the most common reasons why electrical fires happen:

  1. Old electrical sockets and unsafe appliances

Appliances that are old and overused and those that fall short of modern safety standards are the worst culprits. Frayed electrical cords, self-jointed wires, and worn out sockets that are not properly grounded are major causes of fires. They become ready outlets for directing heat and fire to carpets, rugs, curtains and combustible plastic. Older appliances draw more power than the wall sockets can handle.

  1. Using light fixtures that exceed the permissible wattage

A very common cause of fires is plugging lights, lighting appliances and bulbs into electrical sockets that cannot handle higher wattage levels. Antique lighting appliances may have defective wiring that makes the appliance unstable by overheating. Decorating lights with colored paper and cloth shades can increase the risk of fire when the material or fabric heats up.

  1. Using multiple appliances plugged into an extension cord

Unrestricted use of extension cords is a major fire hazard. The risk of fire increases when your TV, home theatre, computer and other appliances are all plugged into a single extension cord. This creates excessive power load on a single socket which may not be designed to handle that load.  So, there is a social and economic cost to damaged wiring!

  1. Locating portable heaters near combustible materials

Portable space heaters that use coils are potentially dangerous when they are positioned carelessly near curtains and rugs and adjacent to beds and cloth covered furniture. The chances of inflammable material coming into contact with the red-hot coils increase the risk of fire.

  1. Wiring that becomes defective with the passage of time

Over a period of time you add more electrical appliances such as wide screen televisions, home theatre, microwave oven, refrigerator and air conditioners. The outdated home wiring cannot handle the increased power load. Older wiring tends to heat up quickly and catches fire. If the breaker boxes are themselves defective, they cannot prevent overheated electrical panels from catching fire.

We partnered up with a local restaurant, Sandwich ETC, to provide lunch for health care workers. We are truly grateful for their wiliness to put their health on the line to help others!

We are stronger together!

Thank you Lamar County Schools!

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is a proud supporter of all of our local schools in Lamar County.

COVID-19 has interrupted or lives, our businesses and our schools. What some people don't realize is that to some kids their school is their safe haven. Its where they have friends, teachers that care about them and love them, and most importantly they know they will have food. So with schools closing what did the school districts come up with?

Numerous Schools and workers got together to make hundreds of sack lunches daily until this is over!! This is amazing and to show our appreciation we went out and gave them Sonic gift cards. With out these workers getting up early and putting together numerous sack lunches there would be a lot of kids left hungry.

SERVPRO of Paris thanks you!!!

Differences in COVID-19 Cleanings

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

Much like water damage categories, there are different levels of COVID-19 cleanings, precautionary, suspected, and confirmed. These differentiations determine protocol when it comes to providing preventative measures as well as cleaning & disinfection after someone within the building has tested positive.

Precautionary/Preventative - cleanings are a measure taken when there has been no confirmed or suspected cases.

Suspected/Person Under Investigation - cleanings happen when there is reasonable suspicion that the virus is present, or one or more people that have been in the building have been tested and are waiting for results.

Confirmed - cleanings happen after there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 onsite.

It is very important that property owners and business stakeholders recognize their own abilities, comfort levels, resources, and risk factors. While all stages require proper precautionary & intentional steps, the CDC has issued the following protocol in regards to confirmed cleaning & disinfection:

  • Workers must be trained to follow OSHA regulations
  • Proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) donning and doffing
  • Compliance with Bloodborne Pathogens and proper disposal of of regulated waste and PPE
  • Disinfectants used include - diluted bleach solutions, alcohol solutions, household cleaners followed by disinfectants, EPA registered household disinfectants

SERVPRO of Paris understands the immediate need for all stages, which is why we have made ourselves available 24/7 to offer disinfection services. We are able to offer disinfection services to buildings of all sizes, including residences for those in need. Please don’t hesitate to call our office for more information on proper protocol, pricing, and the products we are using. 903-784-2700

Be prepared for storm season in Texas

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

Spring in Texas is ripe for any number of weather-related incidents. Anything from Heavy thunderstorms, to tornadoes, to flooding, Spring storms can be tough on homeowners. Since 1980, losses from thunderstorms have increased to an astounding fifteen billion dollars in 2018. Hail storms alone last year cost home owners one billion dollars according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Obviously, we are unable to predict what the weather will be, but with careful planning, you can take the appropriate steps to be prepared when storms hit.

  • Cut down dead or dying branches from trees near your home that could fall during a storm.
  • Always have an emergency kit prepared with a first aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries, non-perishable food, water, and a radio in case of a lengthy power outage.
  • Surge protectors are relatively inexpensive and can save your electronics from being destroyed during a power surge.
  • Keep tabs on the health and stability of your home’s roof, especially after East Texas’ winter months of freezing precipitation. Also, keep your gutters clean and free of debris backup which could flood portions of your lawn and, potentially, your home.
  • Finally, make sure loose items on your decks and patios are tied down during heavy storms.

These simple tasks can help protect your home during the uneven weathered Texas Spring months.

How to Tell if Your Walls are Wet?

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Paris uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.

Gypsum, aka “drywall,” is a very popular material for use in the construction of homes and offices. The material is noted for its strong fire-resistant qualities. However, drywall is also known to be incredibly susceptible to being damaged by moisture compared to many other building materials.

This is, in part, because drywall is extremely porous, readily absorbing moisture and retaining it. If the moisture content (%MC) of drywall exceeds even 1%, then the drywall can be considered “moisture-compromised” and in need of either drying or removal depending on whether or not mold has begun to grow.

Even greenboard, the “water-resistant” drywall, will be damaged by moisture if it gets past the green, water-resistant paper covering that gives greenboard its name. The majority of greenboard’s water resistance comes from the paper covering, not the drywall itself.

Because of how susceptible drywall is to becoming damaged by even minute amounts of moisture, it’s important to be able to accurately assess the amount of water present in drywall.

When looking for a moisture meter to use for testing drywall, some considerations include:

  • Whether or not the meter has a gypsum scale.
  • The range at which the meter detects moisture—the meter should be able to accurately detect very small amounts of moisture.
  • Length of the pins.
  • Additional scales for other materials—most professionals have to work with more than just drywall, so having a moisture meter with the ability to test other materials using different reading scales is a must.

5 Great Ways to Prevent House Fires

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

  1. Avoid Leaving the Kitchen

Fires can start very quickly! This is why you should never leave cooking food unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen for any reason, make sure everything is properly turned off!

  1. Check Your Dryer

Don’t forget to clean out your lint trap every time you put in a new load of laundry. This is one of the most common reasons for fires in the house.

  1. Watch out for Candles

Everyone loves scented candles, especially around the holidays – but if you don’t use them carefully, they could cause a fire. Make sure you put them out before you exit a room and keep them far away from blankets, pets, or other flammable objects.

  1. Fireplace Safety

You don’t want any stray sparks to escape so you need to make sure you have a door between the flames and your flooring. It goes without saying, but never leave the room when the fireplace is going.

  1. Fire Extinguishers First

Fire extinguishers are the first thing you should reach for when a fire breaks out. You want to make sure you have one in every room that is a potential threat, such as the kitchen.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms

  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs
  • Stair Handrails

Specialized Products

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. Veteran's Day

11/11/2019 (Permalink)

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

SERVPRO of Paris is proud to celebrate the contributions and sacrifices of all who served. In fact, we've made a commitment to hire 1,000 veterans of the U.S. Armed forces by 2022.

Asbestos

11/5/2019 (Permalink)

What Is Asbestos?
The following was copied directly from an online article written and located at http://www.chiff.com/a/asbestos-disease.htm.  We thought we would share the information as it was a well written definition.

“Asbestos is a mineral made up of tiny fibers. It can be positively identified only with a special type of microscope. There are several types of asbestos fibers, some are more harmful than others. In the past, asbestos was added to a variety of products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Many homes were made using asbestos for insulation, flooring and in heating and electrical systems.

The danger of using asbestos has been recognized throughout history. Warning about the health effects of asbestos can be found in writings from Ancient Greece! The first documented case of an asbestos-related death was reported in 1906. However, it was not until the late 1970s that laws in America began to change to protect people from the health hazards of asbestos exposure. Asbestos was not totally banned in the UK until late in 1999 and Japan is still waiting to enact laws against all forms of asbestos.”

Dangers Of Asbestos In The Home

“There are detectors available on the market that can alert you to the dangers of smoke or gas in the air — but not so with asbestos.

In the past, asbestos was added to a variety of products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Many homes were made using asbestos for insulation, flooring and in heating and electrical systems.

Effects of Water Damage

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage is a problem that most property owners dread. When it rains heavily or snow melts quickly, the risk of this type of damage increases. Water can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage by damaging wood furniture, upholstery, electronics, household appliances, and plumbing equipment. Water damage also increases the risk of mold growth, which is a very expensive problem to remediate. Hiring a water damage restoration company can make the cleanup process easier to handle, as these companies employ experienced workers who know the best ways to repair or replace damaged items and help with water damage cleanup.

Causes of Water Damage

There are several possible causes of water damage. Leaky dishwashers, clogged toilets, broken pipes, broken dishwasher hoses, overflowing washing machines, leaky roofs, plumbing leaks, and foundation cracks are just some of the possible causes of water damage in homes and businesses. Floods, heavy snow, and heavy rain are other possible causes of this type of damage and can lead to having water in basements. Too much water can lead to minor problems such as water in basement areas, or it can lead to the destruction of homes and businesses. Once a home or business sustains water damage, it is important to start the water damage cleanup immediately. Starting water damage cleanup as soon as possible increases the likelihood of saving water-soaked furniture, carpets, rugs, clothing, and other items.

Categories of Water Damage

Assessing the severity of the damage is important for determining what is needed to start water damage repair and water removal. There are several different categories assigned to water damage. Category 1 refers to clean water, or water that does not pose a threat to humans. Possible causes of this type of damage include broken appliances or sink overflows. Category 2 water is also called gray water. This means that the water is contaminated and may cause sickness of ingested. This type of water contains microorganisms. Broken toilets, broken sump pumps, and seepage may cause category 2 water damage. Category 3 water is known as black water. This type of water is unsanitary, as it contains bacteria and other organisms that cause sickness. The possible sources of black water damage include sewage problems and contamination of standing water.

Restoration Process

The water restoration process is an important one. Using the right procedures and materials can help people save cherished belongings and even prevent their homes from being condemned. SERVPRO of Paris specializes in mitigating the effects of water, but the success for water damage restoration depends on the severity of the damage and the amount of water that caused the damage.

Health Hazards

It is important to call SERVPRO of Paris as soon as possible after water damage occurs. Moisture promotes the growth of mold and other organisms, increasing the risk for serious health problems. Mold exposure may aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, especially in children and people with compromised immune systems. Exposure may also increase the risk for respiratory diseases and other medical problems. Cleaning up immediately can help mitigate the health effects of water damage on everyone in a home or commercial space.

Fall and Fire

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

This fall season brings us cooler temperatures, beautiful colors and several outdoor activities.  Plan ahead this season to help ensure it is safe and fire free.

  • Fall decorations, like dried flowers and cornstalks are highly flammable.  Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep emergency exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume.  Consider avoiding billowing fabric.  If you are making your costume, choose material that won't easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or a flame.
  • It is safest to use flashlights or battery-operated candles in a jack-o-lantern.  Use extreme caution if using a real candle.  Place lit pumpkins away from anything than can burn, and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways and yards.

Fall is here

9/24/2019 (Permalink)

The first day of Fall was, Monday, September 23. On this day, fall begins in the Northern Hemisphere and spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Wondering why it’s called an equinox? Here’s all you need to know.

What is the Autumnal Equinox?

Autumn days come quickly, like the running of a hound on the moor.
Irish proverb

The autumnal equinox—also called the September or fall equinox—is the astronomical start of the fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and the spring season in the Southern Hemisphere.

What is an Equinox?

The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in terms of length. (See more about this below.)

During the equinox, the Suncrosses what we call the “celestial equator”—an imaginary extension into space of Earth’s equator line. The equinox occurs precisely when the Sun’s center passes through this line. When the Sun crosses the equator from north to south, this marks the autumnal equinox; when it crosses from south to north, this marks the vernal equinox.

Fall Equinox FAQs

Q: Are Day and Night Perfectly Equal on the Equinox?

A:  As say that during an equinox, day and night is equal. Well, not exactly. It depends where you live.

On the equinox, the center of the Sun is indeed above the horizon for 12 hours. However, “sunrise” is said to begin when the upper edge of the Sun’s disk becomes visible above the horizon (which happens a bit before the center rises) and ends when the entire Sun has set. In this case, daylight is still a bit longer than nighttime.

Not only that, but the Sun is actually visible when it is below the horizon, as Earth’s atmosphere refracts the Sun’s rays and bends them in an arc over the horizon. Yes, you can see the Sun before the edge actually reaches the horizon! This causes daylight to be longer than 12 hours as well.

However, they are very close to equal (the lengths may be off by only a few minutes).

Did you know our rise/set tool now provides day length? In Dublin, New Hampshire—home of The Old Farmer’s Almanac—our day length on the equinox is 12:08 hours.

See our Sunrise/set calculator for day length in YOUR area.

Q: Is the Autumnal Equinox Really the First Day of Fall?

A: Based on the astronomical definition of seasons, yes, the autumnal equinox does mark the first day of fall (in the Northern Hemisphere). However, according to the meteorological definition of seasons, which is based on temperature cycles and the Gregorian calendar, the first day of fall is September 1.

Food Safety After a Power Outage

9/24/2019 (Permalink)

Ever wonder about the food in your refrigerator after the storm and the power goes out?  What should you keep and what should you throw out?

This is just a tidbit of the online article.  Please click the link above for the entire article.

When the lights blink back on, don’t just assume everything is OK. A few checks are in order first, especially if the power has been out for more than four hours. What’s not in order? Taste testing. You should never taste food to determine if it’s safe. Instead, follow these tips.

    • Meat, poultry and seafood: Discard raw or leftover cooked meat, poultry, fish or seafood that may have been above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or more. Same goes for thawing meat or poultry, along with tuna, shrimp, chicken or egg salad.

    • Dairy: Toss milk, cream, sour cream, yogurt and soy milk that may have been above 40 degrees for two hours or more. Butter and margarine are likely safe to keep.

    • Cheese: Discard soft cheeses, such as bleu, Brie, cottage and others, if they may have been above 40 degrees for two hours or more. Hard cheeses and processed cheeses should be safe.

    • Sauces and condiments: Mayonnaise, tartar sauce and horseradish should go in the trash if they may have been above 50 degrees for more than eight hours. Toss creamy dressings such as ranch, but vinegar-based dressings may be safe to keep. Items such as peanut butter, jelly, relish, ketchup, barbecue sauce and pickles are typically safe.

  • Frozen food: Evaluate frozen (or now partially frozen) items individually. If the food still contains ice crystals, or is has stayed at or below 40 degrees, it should be safe to refreeze.”

Mold

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is a microscopic organism commonly found both indoors and outdoors. Mold, along with mushrooms and yeast, are known scientifically as fungi. Their purpose in nature is to break down dead material and recycle nutrients in the environment. For mold to grow and reproduce, they need a food source - any organic material, such as leaves, wood, paper, or dirt - and moisture. Since mold grows by "eating" the organic material, they gradually destroy whatever they are feeding on.

Mold growth on surfaces can often be seen as a colored spot, frequently green, gray, brown, black or white. It commonly appears as a powdery, fuzzy, or hair-like material. Actively growing mold typically produce odors, sometimes described as earthy or moldy, or like mildew, old dirty socks, or ammonia. Molds release thousands of microscopic spores, which are lightweight, easily airborne and carried by air currents to surrounding areas. The spores must have both food and moisture to actually start growing, similar to plant seeds.

Clean air ducts for your home

8/29/2019 (Permalink)

Are the air ducts in your home dirty? Dirty air ducts can result in the spread of dirty air in all of the home's living spaces. Indoor air can get polluted with  dust, allergens, and other small particles which means you could exposed to a number of health problems including, allergies, asthma and sinus problems.  If you are concerned about your indoor air quality, you might benefit from having your air ducts cleaned. Having your air ducts professionally cleaned may make a difference in the overall quality of your indoor air. And, cleaning your air ducts may also help your HVAC system function more efficiently.

When it comes to air duct cleaning, homeowners often have many questions. Here are a few of the most common:

Does a professional air duct cleaning really make a difference?
A professional air duct cleaning can benefit you in more than one way. First, the cleaning will remove dust, debris and other pollutants from your air duct system. This can be beneficial to anyone living in the home who suffers from allergies, has breathing problems, or is sensitive to pollutants. Second, clean air ducts can result in a more efficient HVAC system. When your home’s ventilation system is clean, it can function more efficiently – which may ultimately save you money on your monthly energy bill.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?
Unless you are in the midst of a home renovation project or you live in an area with extremely high pollution, you should not need to clean your air ducts more than once a year. In fact, after your air ducts are professionally cleaned, you may not need another thorough cleaning for several years. For advice on how often you should have your air ducts cleaned, make sure to ask your air conditioner repair company. If the air conditioner company does not offer air duct cleaning services, they should be able to provide you with the name of a reputable company to call.

Can I clean the air ducts in my home myself?
Many homeowners wonder if they can clean their home’s air ducts with their own vacuum cleaner. In reality, it is practically impossible to clean an air duct system with a regular vacuum. Air duct cleaning companies use special equipment that is designed to specifically clean air ducts. As a homeowner, one of the best things you can do to prevent pollutants from infiltrating your air ducts is regularly change your HVAC system’s air filters.

Is a professional air duct cleaning expensive?
The cost of air duct cleaning services varies. Factors that are taken into consideration when an air duct cleaning company provides you with a quote include the number of air ducts in your home, the age of your home, the length of time since the air ducts were last cleaned, the current condition of the air ducts, and more.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Science of Drying!

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, your Paris SERVPRO is trained to the science of drying and follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers water damage, we have the professionals that will:

- Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.

- Measure how much moisture is in wet material and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.

- Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material – but only if the air is indeed drier. The only problem is nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason SERVPRO of Paris is trained to use top of the line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls and much more.

SERVPRO also uses state of the art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business. The bottom line? SERVPRO of Paris has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.” We are available to help 24 hours / 7 days a week! Give us at a call at 903-784-2700.

Preventing Water Damage During Business Closures

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

There are plenty of reasons you might need to close your business. When you're away, your site might be at risk for catastrophic flood damage. Water pipe repair is costly, so consider doing some preventative work if:

  • You operate seasonally
  •  You were recently the victim of a fire or other premises damage
  • Your location was shut down by legal authorities
  • You're moving to a different location and selling your former property
  • You temporarily suspended operations for an update or remodel

Regardless of the reason you decide to shutter your shop, the last thing you want is to come back to a disaster area. Here are a few steps that could prevent water damage while you and your staff are elsewhere.

Keep Your Equipment Working:

One of the easiest ways you can safeguard your location against water damage is by maintaining your flood control equipment. Sump pumps are by far the most common water management tools, so check your pump batteries and ensure proper mechanical operation before you leave for any amount of time.

Close the Valves:

You could also shut off your main water control. It's always a good idea to be familiar with these control valves: Quick reactions to a broken pipe can save hundreds of dollars in water pipe repair costs down the road.

Insulate:

Insulation is usually considered as prevention against freezing. However, you might be able to get something out of insulating your pipes even if you aren't afraid of them bursting. A little bit of insulation could control minor leaks, protecting sensitive equipment or interior finishes.

It's relatively easy to make sure you have a clean and dry site to come back to, not a flooded one. These are not steps you want to perform every time you leave. However, if you are planning on being gone for more than a few days, these simple processes could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on cleanup and water pipe repair. If you do have trouble give us a call at 903-784-2700

Water Damage In Your Home

7/29/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage in your home is a frustrating and time-consuming problem. No one anticipates the issue; therefore, it’s always a major inconvenience and added expense. Particularly with broken pipes, there are several steps you need to take to start the water cleanup process.

  1. Stop the Water Flow and Clear the Area

When a pipe breaks or bursts, you first need to stop the water flow. Always know how to shut off the water in your house, and turn it off immediately when you notice water leaking. If there is a large amount of water, it’s a good idea to turn off electricity in the room as well. Also clear the area of any decor items, furniture and especially electronics. If there are removable rugs or floor pads, take them out of the room.

  1. Call the Professionals

As tempting as it may be to handle this problem alone, it’s always a good idea to call water damage specialists. They will remove the water and assess the damage to your home. It will give you peace of mind to have professionals dry out the area, as well as items within it. One of the frustrations of having broken pipes is not just the initial water, but also the threat of mold. Professionals will check unseen places, like below flooring and within walls for moisture in order to dry them and prevent mold.

  1. Check with Your Insurance Company

The next call should be to your insurance company. If you have flood insurance, that will be very useful. If not, ask for details of your homeowner’s insurance policy and what exactly it covers. Once you know this information, you can prepare your budget and work with the water removal company on payment.

Water damage from broken pipes is a problem you need to deal with immediately. You should make sure to turn off the water and electricity, call a company specializing in water removal and restoration and check your insurance policies. Following these steps will make a hectic process a little more manageable and have you on your way to a restored home. Call SERVPRO of Paris if you experience any water damage 903-784-2700. We are here to help!

Severe Weather Safety

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms*:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,300 tornadoes
  • 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage.* Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action, and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk.

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business, and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action.

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example.

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Be Flood Smart

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert-there is always potential for flood damage. Floodsmart.gov reports, in the last five years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO® of Paris. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. The SERVPRO® System is prepared to handle any size disaster. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO® of Paris will help you take it back.

Storm Damage Inspections

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

Even if you have no reason to suspect that damage occurred, check your home and its surroundings (once it’s safe to do so, of course). It’s important to identify problems, make emergency repairs and determine if an insurance claim is necessary.

SERVPRO of Paris provides this list of Storm Problems areas.

Roof

Your roof might be the area of your home most vulnerable to damage in a storm, because so many things can impact it. Whether you’ve had high winds and downed tree branches or just a simple hailstorm, look for these indicators of damage:

  • Holes in the roof
  • Missing Shingles
  • Leaks in your roof or ceiling
  • Split seams

Building Exteriors

While siding, stucco and brick all are durable, they also are susceptible to storm damage. In some instances, homeowners don’t notice until it’s too late to file a claim, so check carefully for:

  • Cracking, chipping or dings and dents on siding. Even if there doesn’t appear to be damage at first, check again at a different time of day. You may see something you missed when the lighting is different.
  • Holes in stucco. This is a serious problem, even when small, so look closely. If you find holes, have a professional conduct a full property inspection.
  • Damaged brick and tuck pointing. While brick typically holds up well, a check can identify any problem areas.
  • Detached or damaged trim, gutters, etc.

Storm and flood damage require specialized restoration techniques and equipment. When a storm hits your Paris home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise. SERVPRO of Paris can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

Ways Your Landscaping Can Prevent Flooding

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

When it's storm season in Paris, TX, you may feel like you're fighting a losing battle against outside flooding. After all, if there is too much water for the surrounding area to hold it, flooding and the cost of mitigation services seem inevitable. There are specific landscape elements, however, that can reduce flooding around your home after a rain storm. Incorporating these elements into your design plan can keep water outside and away from your home.

Proper Drainage

The best way to prevent flooding is to redirect excess water to a place where it can be stored or useful. There are several ways to do this:

  • Rain spouts directed to a garden bed and away from the house
  • Swales that capture rain drainage and channel it into an area that thrives on large volumes of water
  • Drainage ditches on either side of the driveway
  • Rain garden that has a water reservoir for watering during drier times

Porous Surfaces A lot of outside flooding occurs because water hits impervious pavements and has nowhere to go. A non-porous surface pushes rain water away. This may be good for the state of the surface, but it can wreak havoc on your yard if you get a lot of rain. Porous surfaces allow rain to sink into them so that it doesn't run off into the street or municipal gutters. Heavy Mulch A difficult problem for most cities to solve is what to do with all the debris that washes into the drainage system after a rainstorm. You can do your part by replacing your light mulch that washes away easily with a heavier mulch. Light wood mulches, such as pine, may be less expensive, but they create more work for everyone in the long run. A heavier hardwood mulch is more likely to stay put. No matter how much rain you get, you can curb outside flooding a little bit by changing up your landscape design. Better drainage, porous surfaces and heavy mulch slow down how much flooding occurs. If you need any help with flood damage or suspect that you have damage please call us at 903-784-2700.

Residual Damage from Fire!

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

When dealing with fire damage, there is more to be cleaned up than just what is affected by the flames. Soot and smoke the fire leaves behind can continue damaging property long after the flames are extinguished, and this can give rise to other issues such as mold and rust as well.

If left untreated, this damage can compound over time, becoming more difficult and costly to remediate.

What Untreated Fire Damage Can Cause

If you’ve been affected by a fire, it is important to call your restoration team right away to prevent giving rise to other issues such as:

Soot Damage. Soot is the most common form of carbon byproduct that materials produce when they burn. Most home and commercial fires consist of multiple burned materials, leading to soot that is highly acidic. This acid can cause damage to nearly any surface it comes into contact with, with porous or textured surfaces being the most at-risk. Any soot allowed to remain in the affected area can lead to damage of carpets, walls and unburnt portions of the house. The longer the soot is allowed to sit, the more unlikely the damage can be reversed.

Mold Damage. After a fire, affected areas are often left without any artificial or natural lighting. If the fire was doused with water or set off a sprinkler system, this creates mold’s ideal environment to thrive. Mold can quickly begin growth on almost any surface, leading to discoloration and damage to items and structures.

Corrosion and Rust Damage. Rust and corrosion might not be the first thing you think of when you consider fire damage, but water left untreated on small electronics can cause it to develop and greatly increase the risk for short-circuits or electrical shock.

If you’ve been affected by a fire, know that SERVPRO of Paris meets all the qualifications and more to make your home safe and back to normal. Contact us today to learn how we’re able to make it “Like it never even happened.”

The Importance of Properly Working Smoke Detectors in Your Home

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

The Importance of Properly Working Smoke Detectors in Your Home

The importance of smoke detectors in preventing fire damage cannot be overemphasized. Unfortunately, too many people overlook their significance even amidst the rising cases of fire disasters in our homes. In fact, while an impressive 90 percent of all homeowners in the country have installed a smoke alarm in their houses, up to 30 percent of them do not function when needed.

At SERVPRO of Paris, we receive numerous fire damage reports that could have been avoided by using smoke detectors. Thankfully, we have a team of highly skilled and highly trained restoration experts certified by the IICRC that are quick to respond to any emergency. Our tools and equipment are up to par with industry standards, ensuring that the restoration process goes smoothly and efficiently.

If the house is structurally sound, the heat and flames usually self-extinguish after consuming all existing combustibles. However, if the wall and ceiling fire resistance is inadequate, the fire can spread into adjacent rooms and begin the process over again. If it is not controlled, the fire can lead to complete destruction of the building and its contents.

Proper installation and maintenance is the answer to reducing the impact of fire damage with smoke alarms. A licensed professional should install the device on every level of your house, as well as the interior and exterior of each sleeping area. Avoid placing smoke detectors within 3 feet of a heating/air conditioning vent or ceiling fan, which can block the smoke from flowing to the device during a fire emergency.

SERVPRO franchise is particularly thorough when it comes to safety precautions. To ensure that your smoke alarm works at preventing extensive fire damage, you should test the device on a monthly basis, changing the batteries as needed. Additionally, make a point of replacing the entire smoke detector every ten years or so to guarantee efficiency.

You can tell when a smoke alarm is not working properly if it beeps slowly and consistently, indicating that you need a new one or the batteries are running low. Apart from beeping, most devices come with a "low battery" button that blinks when necessary. This is a clear warning that the unit may not do much to prevent fire damage.

Successful fire damage suppression is relatively dependent on a functional smoke detector. If your home sustains severe fire damage nonetheless, SERVPRO of Paris can arrive on time to salvage your property. For any emergency, call us today at (903)784-2700.

Destroy Odors with Deodorization

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO® of Paris professionals provide specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. SERVPRO® of Paris professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO’s own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts and more.

Ask SERVPRO® of Paris to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

If you or a customer suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO® of Paris. Whether it’s fire, water, or mold damage or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Quick guide to know whether your carpet must be replaced following a water damage

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

Dealing with the water removal, drying and disinfecting, and dehumidification following the devastating effects of water damage from a pipe break in your home in Paris, TX can be very upsetting. In addition you need to see that the cause of the water damage is remedied, and undergo repair or replacement of many elements of your home. How do you decide your carpet can be dried out and re-stretched to live out its normal lifespan? It may possibly be saved, but that depends on the type of water that has saturated it. There are three different categories of water that may affect the decision.

1. Clean Water If the water comes from a pipe break or leaking water supply line, then likely the carpet could be dried out and saved for re-use. If the carpet itself is heavily soiled or it is left wet for an extended period of time, it can deteriorate further. If resolved early on, the carpet can usually be saved.

2. Gray Water Gray water comes from an overflowing toilet, or from a malfunctioning dishwasher or washing machine. It may contain urine and other bacterial or virus components but no feces, and can also deteriorate. The decision to keep carpet exposed to Gray Water is a tricky one and may depend on the speed of removal and whether an effective disinfection process can be undergone.

Signs You May Have a Shower Leak

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

When you walk into your bathroom in Paris, TX, you expect to see a functioning tub, shower, toilet and sink. Sometimes, however, these fixtures spring a leak and cause unexpected water damage. You may be able to notice signs of a bathtub leak before the damage becomes detrimental to your home. Working with a residential water cleanup team can help you find flooding issues quickly.

1. Water Stains: Water stains can show up around the walls of your tub and shower, but they may also make their appearance below your bathroom. If the bathroom is on the second floor, you can check for signs of a shower pan leak by looking at the ceiling under the bathroom. If it's on the first floor, you may need to go into the crawlspace or basement to look for signs of water stains.

2. Grout Cracks: Tiled showers can show signs of a leak too. When the moisture gets trapped behind the tiles, it tries to come out wherever it can. This leads to cracked grout lines. Sometimes you may even notice cracks in your tiles.

3. Loose Flooring: A bathtub leak can also mess with the flooring in your bathroom. Whether you have tiles or vinyl floors, you may notice the building materials has become loose. If tiles wiggle when you step on them, it could be a sign there's a leak. Laminate flooring, on the other hand, may start to curl up when introduced to too much moisture.

4. Peeling Paint: Look at the walls around the tub and shower. Do you notice peeling paint or falling down wallpaper? This could be a sign that there's moisture being released into the walls.

A shower or bathtub leak is something you want to catch as soon as possible. If you leave this problem to fester, it can cause major damage to your walls, insulation and flooring. Call us at SERVPRO of Paris is you need any help with possible leaks and inspections. 903-784-2700

Steps to help minimize and prevent further water damage.

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

There’s no such thing as a small disaster, especially when you have water damage in your home. Water damage can affect the value of your property and if not cleaned properly, may cause major problems over time. Don’t leave your property to chance, call SERVPRO of Paris. Consider the following steps to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Remove as much excess water possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  • Do not enter rooms with standing water; electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air. Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
  • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to contaminated areas.

Unclean Airducts in Your Business?

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

After a cool Winter, many will be turning their air conditioners on more and more as the temperature rises. But, indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles.

5 Steps to Remove Odors From Your Business

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

If a flood hits your business, there may be a strange, unwelcome odor permeating the air and displeasing customers, employees or yourself. Depending on the source, there are multiple ways to treat the problem. Whether it’s mold growth or something else, you can act to remove the smell with these five steps.

1. Ventilate the Building and Evaluate the Situation. If there is a window or door that can be opened, it should be. This allows any lingering scents to disperse. You can then work to identify and locate any centralized, problematic scents still remaining in your business building. Once the problem is located, you should decide how to proceed. If sewage loss is causing the odor, it’s best to stay away from the contaminated water and contact a professional.

2. Dry Wet Carpeting and Flooring Carpet holds moisture rather well, and it may be the source of the scent that is overwhelming your business. A wet and dry vacuum, which can be rented if needed, can shampoo the carpet and then dry it afterwards. This sanitizes the area to potentially remove some of the bothersome smell.

3. Scrub Moldy Surfaces Mold growth left alone will continue to reproduce and spread along with its musty odor. Any visible growth on a solid surface can be treated with thorough scrubbing using a solution such as vinegar.

4. Spray Furniture and Upholstery If you have access to a spray bottle, furniture can be sprayed and scrubbed the same way as hard surfaces. However, porous materials are likely not able to be fully cleaned this way, since the fungus settles deep within.

5. Consult Professionals for Extensive Cleanup Not everything can be done without commercial grade machines and proper procedures. An expert storm and mold damage treatment company can help remove problems caused by floodwater and other water damage. When dealing with flood odors, most do-it-yourself remedies will fix only the symptom. With an expert team’s help, you can remove most of the unwanted smells alongside any mold growth or other nuisance.

How to Handle a Misfire of Fire Sprinklers

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

Fire sprinklers are great to many businesses for their ability to stop fires in their early stages from consuming more property and becoming costlier. In some situations, these systems can unexpectedly trigger when there is no fire. This leads to flooding and its associated expenses. You can act to mitigate the water’s threat by understanding the causes of defects and how to stop the system during an incident.

Causes of a Fire Sprinkler Gone Awry Sprinkler systems have safeguards to stop them from deploying except during a fire. There are several circumstances that can cause them to errantly deploy:

• Frozen pipes causing pressure to break pipes and leak

• Abnormal heat from abnormally hot weather or roof damage letting heat in

• Damage to the mechanism by service work done in or around the ceiling by yourself or others

• Vandalism for scrap parts or with the intention of committing insurance fraud using arson

• Metal corrosion from stagnant water in the pipes or sprinklers

Stopping the Water From Causing Property Damage.

The most important step for stopping sprinklers from flooding your business it to identify where your business’ water shutoff valve is located. You should familiarize yourself with its operation, so you can stop the sprinklers if there is no fire. In case you are absent, other trusted employees should also be informed of it.

Water damage can ultimately be prevented with occasional professional inspection of your fire sprinklers. Proper maintenance ensures the system will deploy only when you need it. It’s good practice to make sure the sprinklers are clear of obstructions and not used to hang decorations. Misuse risks damaging the units.

Handling the Aftermath- Your insurance should be contacted and informed of the fire sprinkler malfunction to work out coverage. A professional water damage restoration crew is preferred to handle water removal and repair. Your actions impact the total cost of such services. With proper measures taken before and during a defective sprinkler incident, you can prevent extensive flooding to your business in Paris, TX.

How To Safely Remove Odors, Kill Germs And Clean The Air

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

The Hydroxyl Generator is one of the most scientifically-advanced pieces of equipment we use to combat malodors and leave a property deodorized following biohazard, fire or water damage events.

The main benefit of using a true hydroxyl generator is that they are safe to use in occupied areas for deodorization purposes. For insurance companies and commercial businesses alike, they love this machine because it means less out of pocket expenses and henceforth, less business disruption!

These generators have been successfully tested on fires and other restoration and bio jobs, including protein fires, floods, dead body situations, skunk odors, pet urine odors, musty odors and many types of odors. However, it’s important to note that hydroxyl generators are not intended for use on mold remediation jobs where there is a large infestation on surfaces or behind walls. The established protocols should always be followed in these instances. But generators with good filtration are excellent for airborne microbial remediation where bacteria or fungi have become aerosolized.

Here’s a rundown of some additional facts in order to give you the inside scoop, should you ever need to reach out to us for smoke/soot deodorization needs:

How it Works:

  • UVA rays are emitted from the titanium dioxide photocatalytic lamps (wow, that was a mouthful) where they then pass through a permanent anatase coated super reactor screen, forming electron hole pairs that react with water and oxygen in the air to form free electrons and hydroxyl radicals that then decompose and eliminate organic and inorganic gases and air pollutants. Wow, trying saying all that in one breath!
  •  Applications:
  • Use on fire and flood damage restoration jobs
  • Use to destroy odors from cigarette smoke, dead body, urine, garbage, airborne VOCs and more

Flood Damage Cleanup

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

When heavy flooding occurs in Paris, TX, it can cause widespread damage throughout your home. From soaked drywall to standing water that can warp or rot wooden or carpeted flooring, flood waters can wreak havoc on every level of your house. However, before you begin the cleanup process, it is important that you understand the difference between storm floods and those that stem from plumbing problems, as the remediation and restoration for each can differ.

1. Storm Floods Are Usually Widespread When violent storms cause flooding, the water can be difficult to control or divert. Even streams or creeks that spill over during heavy rain are capable of creating significant flood waters that can pour into your home. When this happens, almost any room can be affected, and unlike small plumbing floods, the water cannot be confined to one area.

2. Flood Water Is Contaminated Flood damage cleanup presents a unique set of challenges because of the condition of the water. Overflowing sewers, animal waste and pesticides from flooded lawns can severely contaminate flood water and make it dangerous to handle. Experienced technicians that work at a storm cleanup and remediation service usually call this Category 3, or black water, as it did not come from a sterile source, such as a broken kitchen pipe or water line, both of which are generally considered Category 1.

3. Mold Growth Can Happen Quickly Standing water that stems from heavy floods can increase the humidity in your home and accelerate mold growth on walls, ceilings and furniture. Having the rooms drained as soon as possible can decrease this type of water damage. However, if mold develops afterward, it is wise to ask your cleanup technicians to perform a flood cut in each room to ensure no fungi has spread into the interior walls. Flooding can cause significant damage when it invades your home.

Understanding the difference between outdoor floods and those that begin indoors will likely make the cleanup process less stressful.

Mold is not Always Easy to Spot

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

One of the most common problems that homeowners face are mold and mildew infestations. This fungus grows on anything and thrives anywhere it can find moisture, especially places that are damp, warm, poorly lit, and poorly ventilated. Not only does it produce a musty, unpleasant odor, but when left unchecked it can cause serious damage.

Mold is not limited to growing in obvious places, it can grow and thrive in the dark corners of your home. These leaks can be small and hard to notice especially when they are behind walls.

Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. If you suspect you have mold in your home, you should call us to inspect your home. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Call us at 903-784-2700

What is a Category 3 Water Loss?

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Flood water is classified based on level of contamination: category one, two or three. Knowing what type of flood is an important factor for how to approach the cleanup situation. Category three water requires the most careful deliberation to properly clean the mess. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Category 3 Water?

Category one water is often referred to as a “clean water” flood, referring to non-contaminated water, but category three, or “black water,” is on the other end of the spectrum. Black water is defined as such because it may contain some of the following contaminants:

  • Microbes
  • Chemicals
  • Fungi
  • Heavy metals
  • Bacteria

Anytime there is a natural flood, the water is considered contaminated. This is true for rivers, creeks, and sea water. Most black water floods are caused from something more familiar to your environment: sewage overflows. A toilet overflow is one of the most common causes of a category three flood in a commercial building, so it’s important to know what to do if you experience black water flooding in your building.

What Can You Do While You Wait?

As in the case of any flood water, safety is the first step, but with a black water flood that means taking some added precautions. While a flood remediation expert will do the work and guide the way, here are some things you can do while waiting for help:

  1. Make sure electricity is off.
  2. Protect your skin from contact with the contaminated water.
  3. Act quickly to remove all water.
  4. Remove smaller items from the flood area.
  5. Lift furniture onto blocks or use aluminum foil to prevent wood from absorbing water.
  6. Turn up the air conditioner, use fans, or open windows to allow maximum airflow.

Help Arrives Knowing how to recognize category three flood water and how to start the initial cleanup are helpful to minimizing damage while you wait for help. SERVPRO of Paris water mitigation specialists have experience dealing with these types of floods and use their knowledge and specialized equipment to clean it up the right way. 903-784-2700

Why Water Damage Should be Dried by a Water Mitigation Company

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage is both an inconvenience and a destructive force, often causing a lot of damage. Of course, it can also be expensive, even with insurance. While many would opt to clean and repair water damage on their own if they could, it’s quite the risk. That’s why we urge you to call your local water mitigation company.

Mold Growth

One of the main reasons you should have a professional disaster restoration company dry your water damage is because remaining moisture can encourage mold growth. The faster water damage is dried, the lower the odds you’ll have mold. That’s why our technicians will also apply an antimicrobial spray—to inhibit potential mold growth.

Hidden Moisture

Depending on where water damage occurs, it’s possible that water was absorbed or got behind materials. For example, in many instances, water will get behind walls or under flooring where it cannot be seen by the naked eye. A professional disaster restoration company, however, can use moisture meters and other specialized equipment to detect high levels of moisture and determine areas that need to dry.

Your Local Disaster Restoration Company

Water damage can disrupt lives, but by calling in professionals immediately, you can mitigate the impact it has over the long term. If you have water damage don’t hesitate to call us at SERVPRO of Paris 903-784-2700

What is an Emergency Ready Profile?

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

According to FEMA, around 40% of businesses fail to reopen after a disaster. And to make things worse, the United States Small Business Administration found that over 90% of businesses close within 2 years of a disaster. But despite these alarming statistics, you can mitigate the impact of a disaster if you make preparations in advance. One of the easiest ways you can begin preparations is by creating an Emergency Ready Profile.

All of Our Business’ Vital Information

An Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) is a document comprised of all of your business’ vital information. It includes emergency contact information, utility shut-off locations, and other information you or your employees might need in an emergency situation.

Your local SERVPRO franchise will create an ERP for your business—free of charge! A representative will come in and ask a few questions, then get the necessary information regarding shut-offs and emergency exit points. The whole process should take no more than a few minutes of your time!

After your representative complies the documents, they will present both a physical and a digital copy of the ERP. And in some cases, they will give a copy to your local fire department to have for their own records.

Recovering Your Business

After a disaster, your priority should be to get your business back to its normal operations. Fortunately, an ERP allows you the opportunity to quickly respond and take crucial actions. So if you want to get an ERP for your business call SERVPRO of Paris today at 903-784-2700!

Where Do You Begin When You Need Fire Damage Repair?

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

About 380,000 people needed fire damage repair in their homes after an accidental or unintentional fire, according to the latest statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration. Cooking accidents, heating issues, and electrical malfunctions account for close to 70% of all residential home fires. If you need fire or smoke damage repairs in Paris or surrounding area, call a professional fire and smoke restoration specialist like SERVPRO of Paris

Fire Prevention

Removing fire damage, soot, and smoke from walls, ceilings, and floors is a not a simple task. Take the following steps to minimize the risk of fire and smoke damage to your home in the future.

  1. Electrical - Check and replace damaged electrical outlets, plugs, cords, and wires regularly and do not keep them covered or pinched against a wall. Avoid overloading your homes circuit system and use surge protectors rather than unprotected power strips.
  2. Kitchen – Often overlooked as part of a kitchen setup is the fire extinguisher. Keep one in close reach and prepare yourself to use it. Most ovens have a self-cleaning button; use it regularly to prevent buildup. Keep the stovetop clean to minimize grease fires.
  3. Appliances - A clothes dryer holds lint and many other appliances with a fan or motor suck in dust and other particles. Clear the filter of lint after each load and the dryer vent often. Clean under all appliances regularly to prevent buildup.
  4. Other fire causes include smoking, placing grills less than 10 feet away from your home, and children’s curiosity.

Even When the Fire is Contained Quickly the Smoke Damage can be Severe

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Dealing with Fire Damage in Your Home

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

The process involved will definitely differ depending on the severity and size of the fire and damage caused, as you can see in the image to your right this is quite severe fire damage. However the principles of fire damage restoration will for the most part be the same.

Like in most restoration projects the main goal you are trying to reach is preloss condition, that is you want your property to be restored back to how it was before the damages occurred; you want it to be safe, clean, free of smokey odors, and of course looking "Like it never even happened."

Now at this point we are going to assume that the fire has been put out, everybody is safe, and you are now looking at the damage caused and are wondering what to do next.

Before you start any work ensure that:

  • the property is structurally sound and is safe to re-enter
  • you have identified any safety hazards that may be present

As you re-enter the property you will want to get rid it of any lingering smoke and gasses that may still be present. You can do this by opening windows and doors and releasing them outside. In situations where there is a lot of smoke still lingering inside the property and you have neighbors close by then you will want to exhaust the air through an air filtration device (AFD). An AFD unit will process the air through a series of filters reducing its potency and potentially harmful contents.

Once you have taken care of these initial steps and are ready to assess what work needs to be done. You should be taking note of the two main types of possible damagethe obvious burnt and charred materials and the less obvious smoke and soot damage.

Now, you will need to make a decision whether to repair or replace the affected items or property. Any items or property that got burnt and charred will be easier to spot and will likely need replacement, if you are not sure on what to do with a certain item you should get it out of the property until your decision is made. As once we start the cleaning process we will want all burnt and charred materials out of the property.

Once all the burnt materials are out of the home you can start looking at what got damaged indirectly. It becomes trickier to decide whether to repair or to replace an item that has been affected by smoke and soot as the process can be difficult and costly.

Okay, so now you know the first few steps on how to get started on a fire damage restoration project. If your property has suffered a fire damage incident that is of a large scale or simply outside your comfort zone to handle yourself give SERVPRO of Paris a call at (903)784-2700

What's In Flood Water??

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Should you clean your commercial air ducts?

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles.

What Exactly Is Mold?

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. Bacteria can start to grow within hours and mold can start to grow within days. Mold spores can lay dormant for years until an ideal growing condition develops, in which they start to flourish. Especially during the summer, the warm humid conditions are a perfect microenvironment for mold growth.

When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture. Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people allergic to it. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage.

Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration. In a standard situation, SERVPRO of Paris will examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels. Some situations require the assistance of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional (IEP) with specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair the structure. IEPs can test and clear a structure for mold by collecting air and surface samples. Then they can determine whether the mold has been successfully decontaminated. We encourage you to call us today if you suspect a mold problem in your home or business. We handle mold remediation work on a daily basis and know when prompt action is required to prevent further mold growth. SERVPRO of Paris technicians are trained to control microbial problems in structures by promptly drying wet or damp materials according to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards and removing or replacing wet or damp porous materials, like drywall, that have visible mold growth. Call today for an immediate response. We are here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Mold Can Be Tricky To Spot!

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

One of the most common problems that homeowners face are mold and mildew infestations. This fungus grows on anything and thrives anywhere it can find moisture, especially places that are damp, warm, poorly lit, and poorly ventilated. Not only does it produce a musty, unpleasant odor, but when left unchecked it can cause serious damage.

Mold is not limited to growing in obvious places, it can grow and thrive in the dark corners of your home. In one home, mold was growing because of a leak in their ice-maker water line.

The Process of Mold Remediation

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Nobody wants to hear the word mold. Since our youth we have been taught mold is bad and harmful to your health. If you have mold on your food you throw it away. If mold is in the air you pray for rain and head to the drug store for sinuses medicine. If mold is involved there is a problem, especially if it is in your house. But, luckily for everyone mold can be remediated. People forget there are mold spores all around us outside all the time. The purpose of a house is to protect you from the outside elements like keeping mold spores in nature. Some individuals are more sensitive to allergies than others. Good thing mold remediation is a common practice and can be done in a timely manner with some simple steps.

First and foremost, the moisture source of the mold growth must be eliminated or fixed before cleaning can begin. If you notice a water leak, please contact a plumber immediately.

Mold remediation can simplified into three steps:

  1. Control Environment-Set up containment, air filtration equipment and negative air flow to control environment and prevent further contamination.
  2. Remove and Clean- Remove and properly dispose of all porous materials contaminated with mold. Clean all nonporous materials contaminated with mold, HEPA vacuum, and apply anti-microbial agent.
  3. Dry Structure- Dry structure to reduce moisture levels below that which enables growth. Obtain final clearance testing from Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP).

SERVPRO of Paris specializes in mold remediation for both commercial and residential buildings. If you notice mold growing in your home or business, please give us a call today at 903-784-2700.

Do you know the differences between clean, gray and black water?

5/22/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to damage, all water is not created equal. From a burst pipe or a flood, it’s important to understand how each type of water must be treated differently.

Classifications of Water

Water is typically classified into three groups—clean, gray, and black.

  • Clean Water: Clean water includes rainwater and water from broken pipes. You may also hear clean water referred to as white water. This water is safe to touch. Clean water can become gray water after around 48 hours.
  • Gray Water: Gray water refers to slightly contaminated water that needs to be thoroughly treated before it is safe to consume. Sources of gray water include dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. It does not contain bacteria that are as harmful as those found in black water. Gray water usually progresses into black water after about 48 hours if it is not treated.
  • Black Water: Black water is highly contaminated and contains harmful chemicals and biological matter. Sewage waters are considered black water. When it comes to floods, it should be assumed that all water is black water since a flood picks up contaminants along its path. Contact with black water can lead to serious illness.

Differences in Cleaning

Each classification of water requires different steps, tools, and knowledge to properly clean and dry. At SERVPRO of Paris, we can help locate the source of the water, determine what type of water you’re dealing with, fix the cause of the problem, and properly treat the damage. Fire!

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

One of the most common causes of house fires is something you would never think as a possible danger. Thirty-two percent of all home fires and deaths related to those are caused by space heaters, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

With the cold that sets over the North East Texas area, some residents are using space heaters to try and keep their homes and garages warm during those cold nights. Having a space heater on while you sleep can put you and your family at extreme risk for a home fire. When a space heater is left unattended and is too close to flammable items, a massive fires can occur. Which can cause injury or even death to the occupants of the home.

Be safe and reduce your risk when using a space heater, as they can be a great addition to the home during those annoyingly cold months. Following safety precautions can reduces the risk of fire. Making sure your heater is on a flat surface, and is being used in proper area of the home and garage, can also reduce your risk of starting a house fire.

So we here at SERVPRO of Paris ask the wonderful members of our community to be responsible and think about all the risks that go along with having a home and living in the community. We are not only responsible for ourselves but also our neighbors and fellow community members.

Ward Off Prospective Mold Troubles

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

You can take practical steps to foster mold prevention in your unoccupied building. Be familiar with your building's materials, keep surfaces free of debris and make reasonable improvements to substandard fixtures. Turn off the water to avert any surprises from leaky pipes. Keep the heat down, but not all the way off if you can avoid it. The aim is to maintain low humidity by cultivating a cool, dry environment. Some air movement can actually help in this regard and can dry up existing condensation.  These steps can take you a long way toward curtailing future mold issues. Know What Makes Mold Grow?

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

There are three components conducive to the flourishing of mold spores. 1. Moisture 2. A food source 3. Warmth Generally, moisture is the most important condition for mold growth, and may arise from many sources. Water pipes or roofs may harbor leaks. Condensation can intensify in areas with poor ventilation or insulation, such as basements. Humid climates naturally generate dampness, which can seep into the structure and aggravate preexisting problems. A disaster such as a flood may cause serious water damage, after which immediate mold prevention measures should be taken by a mold remediation specialist. While mold growth begins with moisture, a steady source of food can really make it mushroom. Unfortunately, such sources are usually readily available in common building materials such as wood, drywall and carpeting. All these contain cellulose, which comes from plant cells and is rich in the nutrients mold needs. Additional food sources include dust and other organic substances. Mold thrives particularly well in hot, humid places. There's a direct relationship between moisture and air temperature. The higher the temperature, the more moisture the air can hold.

Dealing With Storm Damage To Your Property

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

Dealing with repairs and insurance companies after severe weather hits your property can be difficult. Homeowners can use the following tips to help tackle the storm damage caused by hard rains, flooding, or storm-related issues.

SAFETY FIRST

If you and your family were away from home when the storm hit, do not return until it has been confirmed safe. Contact a storm damage expert like SERVPRO of Paris; we’ll help you determine if your home is safe to return to.

INSURANCE

You will need to contact your homeowners’ insurance adjuster as soon as possible. If your neighborhood has sustained widespread damage, find out if any special teams of insurance agents, relief workers, or contractors are coming to the area. Check your policy to find out what actions you need to take or talk to your agent to make sure you are following the proper procedures. Not following these actions correctly could result in a reduced claim. Inspect your property and make a list of all damages; take photographs of all noted damage if at all possible.

RECORDING AND DOCUMENTING

Document your neighbor’s damages, as well; this can prevent the insurance provider from downgrading your claim by saying the damage is from your neglect of maintenance or other unrelated issues by giving them a way to compare. Keep a record of all the communication you have with your insurance provider, and don’t do any unnecessary repair work yourself. Hire a trusted storm damage restoration service provider such as SERVPRO of Paris to handle any repairs.

 BE SCAM FREE

Always check the adjuster’s identification. If you are evacuated, ask for money from your claim upfront. If they agree, you will be given a check for an amount that will be deducted from your final settlement. Some providers will automatically offer a partial payment early on during the process. Review it carefully and decline it if you feel uncomfortable with any part of it. Never be afraid to ask questions and to expect an answer that makes sense or seems fair.

Dealing with a storm's aftermath is stressful, but reacting properly will be an immense help and can prevent problems down the road.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Mold?

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Homeowners insurance does not usually cover mold damages. Although, there are instances when mold is covered. These instances are generally when the cause of mold is due to an incident that homeowners insurance does cover. For example, if mold has grown due to accidental and sudden pipe burst or if a recent fire has caused mold, your homeowners insurance will likely cover the mold damages. On the contrary, if mold has grown due to improper maintenance practices, such as on-going humidity exposure or a continuous leak, homeowners insurance will not likely cover the damages.

If you believe you may have a mold issue give us  a call today to have one of our experienced technicians come out and access your concerns!! SERVPRO of Paris 903-784-2700

Damage From Storms, Is It Covered By Insurance

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Storms can do a lot of damage to homes, but many homeowners learn the hard way (or the wet way) that their homeowners' insurance doesn't cover property damage caused by hurricanes and floods. If you live in a potentially affected area -- which could include everything from a home on the coast near a fragile levee that sees frequent floods to one downhill from a stream that hasn't flooded in years -- you probably should research a separate flood insurance policy to cover your home and its contents.

Be sure you understand what is included in your coverage. Talk to an agent if you have any questions, want to make updates or would like to know if any additional coverages are available.

Do's and Don't of a Water Damage

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

THE DO’S OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting
  • Wipe excess water damage from wood furniture after removal of lamps and table top items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and pillow cushions for even drying
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying (in summer)
  • Remove Oriental rugs or other colored rugs from wet wall-to-wall carpeting
  • Remove valuable paintings and art objects to a safe, dry place
  • Open and place luggage, in sunlight to dry, if possible
  • Gather loose items, toys, etc. from floors

THE DON’TS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Leave wet fabrics in place; dry as soon as possible. Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature
  • Leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors
  • Use a standard vacuum to remove water
  • Use TVs or other major appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water

We sincerely hope these experiences never happen to you but if they do we are standing by to help, 24 hours a day/7 days a week, and can be reached at 903-784-2700.

Are Your Walls Wet? How Can You Tell?

SERVPRO uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.

SERVPRO uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

1/29/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process. There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Texarkana will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

How to Prevent a Kitchen Fire

1/29/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know the kitchen is where more home fires occur than anywhere else in the house and that cooking is the number one cause of home fires? The American Red Cross has steps everyone can follow to avoid a cooking fire:

  1. Never leave cooking food unattended – stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a second, turn off the stove.
  2. Check your food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking.
  3. Use a timer so you’ll remember that the stove or oven is on.
  4. Don’t wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  5. Keep the kids away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove.

To learn how to prevent a fire in your home and how to keep members of your household safe, you can take our cooking safety quiz and download the Red Cross Fire Prevention and Safety Checklist. Downloadable fact sheets are also available on how to avoid home heating fires, candle safety, proper use of smoke alarms and teaching your children what to do in the event of a fire.

How To Prevent Frozen Water Pipes

1/26/2018 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes are one of the most common and costliest property damage events during the cold winter months. In fact, a burst pipe can result in tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Fortunately, frozen pipes can be prevented quite easily and inexpensively.

Vulnerable pipes in existing homes should be fitted with insulation sleeves or wrapping to slow the heat transfer. It is important not to leave gaps in the insulation that expose the pipe to cold air. Hardware stores and home centers stock a variety of foam rubber and fiberglass sleeves, in various thicknesses.

When water is colder than 32 degrees Fahrenheit or zero degrees Celsius, it freezes into ice. When water freezes, it expands up to nine percent more than it did when it was water. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on metal or plastic pipes causing pipes to burst and water to leak.

Cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near water pipes should be sealed with caulking to keep cold wind away from the pipes. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets can keep warm inside air from reaching pipes under sinks and in adjacent outside walls. It’s a good idea to keep cabinet doors open during cold spells to let the warm air circulate around the pipes.

Mold Removal vs Mold Remediation

1/26/2018 (Permalink)

What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Get Rid of Mold

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

It looks like this lady is getting rid of some pretty tough issues.....

Here are some healthy tips to follow when you are dealing with mold. Some people cringe at the sound of the word mold but it may be easier to take care of then you think. Hopefully these will help ease the stress along the way.

  • Take things that were wet for 2 or more days outside. Things that stay wet 2 or more days can have mold on them. Mold is not always visible by looking.
  • Take out stuff made of cloth, unless you can wash them in HOT water.
  • Use bleach to clean mold of of hard things(like floors, counter tops, toys, tools, and plates.)
  • Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
  • wear rubber boots, rubber gloves, googles, and a mask.
  • Open windows and doors to get fresh air when you use bleach.
  • Mix no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water.
  • Wash the item with the bleach and water mixture.
  • Rinse the item with clean water.
  • Dry the item or leave it out to dry.

What Plumbers Say Cause Drain Issues

6/29/2017 (Permalink)

Buzz Lightyear calls it like he sees it.

As a homeowner you should never underestimate the seriousness of drainage issues. Plumbers have weighed in and have given their expert opinion on what causes these issues and some tips on how to avoid them. Here are the four things to look for.

  1. Recurring Clogs- If a clog returns, chances are that there is a deeper clog.
  2. Multiple Clogged drains-If you have several clogged drains, you may have a clog in your main drain.
  3. Foul odor-Persistent sewer odors coming from your drain or drains can be a major sign of a drainage issue.
  4. Flooding-One of the worst problems associated with clog drains is sewage backup. Getting a professional on the site as soon as you can will help you avoid a big problem.

Routine maintenance is key to keeping those drains open. Use drain catchers or less toilet paper. Also make sure that you run plenty of water into the garbage disposal after use. Just those few things help a lot. If you ever do have water damage, call SERVPRO of Paris with your water needs. We will be there to clean up the mess those clogged drains made.

Avoid Scams After Storm Damage

5/31/2017 (Permalink)

This is a good indication of what is actually happening during what you may think is a good deal.

When your dealing with a natural disaster such as a storm, tornado, or hurricane, you can be sure that scammers will be around the corner. If the community has been affected the con-artist come to call. Most of us trust people willing to step in for the cause. We believe in our fellow man. Typically, they will offer to do work for a certain price, then ask for a portion of the payment up front-in cash. Then they use an excuse to leave and disappear forever. Here are some tips to avoid scams in a storm situation.

  • Go local.
  • Always get the proposal in writing
  • Never pay more than one-third of the cost up front.
  • Never let someone force you to make a quick decision.
  • Don't pay in cash.
  • Do not fall for the first offer that comes along
  • Ask around to family and friends for a trusted company.

Scammers have no shame in taking from those in distress. A disaster can cause a lot of stress and scramble for help as soon as possible. Take your time and avoid being scammed.

Commercial Loss Challenges

5/30/2017 (Permalink)

Fire losses account for approximately $2.3 billion in commercial and industrial direct property loss each year.  At times you can have large-loss fires that affect buildings such as apartments, facilities, and places people work. These types of losses affect multiple lives. It can take a lot of effort on everyone's part to provide support. Here are some tips for the property owner to consider during this time.

  • Make sure everyone is safe and away from the property. Safety is the number one concern.
  • Get the community involved in helping families or workers that may be affected
  • Bring your adjuster in early to help manage things such as photos, mitigation, documenting anything they need to.
  • Analyze your policy, including all clauses, additions, extensions, and exclusions.
  • Bring in experts to check out the damages
  • Communication is key. Everyone should stay in good contact to get the job done as smoothly as possible.
  • Know that the process can be long and require a lot of patience.

Tornado Season is Upon Us

5/17/2017 (Permalink)

Everybody knows you cannot avoid mother nature. Tornadoes can cause great damage in the lives of people who encounter them. Tornadoes occur when a warm front meets a cold front, forming a thunderstorm that can form twisters. The regions of west Texas up to North Dakota carry the greatest risk for tornadoes. Always get in the middle of the house or in the smallest room with no windows. Stay away from your outside windows. When you hear a warning, take cover. Always be prepared for a tornado event during the season. A lot of people lose their homes, pets, and even their lives during a tornado. Make sure to be supportive in clean up around your community. The source of the water is very important also. There are many things to consider during the time of the loss. Let us help you through the tough stuff. Call SERVPRO of Paris today to get the job done right.

Good Mold VS. Bad Mold

4/26/2017 (Permalink)

When most of us hear the word mold we assume it could be good mold or bad mold. Let's take good mold for example. It is found in medicines to cure illness. It is also found in cheeses and of course the moldy loaf of bread left open a little to long.  Next we have a type of normal mold that falls in between good and bad. There are two types of normal molds. There are airborne mold spores and mold growth. There is simply no way around the airborne mold. This type of mold is present to some degree in the air we breath. The mold we see in our homes such as in the window seals and bathtubs are simply common day to day molds. They are not from a sustainable food source. It can be cleaned away, so this makes it normal. The bad mold people fear most is considered bad mold because it could potentially affect the air with elevated mold spores which is quite a bit different than normal. The food sources within a home are pretty numerous. Materials must be properly removed and/or cleaned. Airborne issues must also be addressed.   The first step a homeowner should take if they suspect mold is to call a specialist to ensure the proper precautions and testing are done properly.

BEFORE, DURING, & AFTER A FLOOD

4/26/2017 (Permalink)

No other natural disaster in America has caused more deaths then flooding. Floods are among the most destructive, natural hazards in the world. If you are in a flood zone or want to be prepared for a flood you might want to invest in a boat. That was just a joke but may be a good idea. Prepare your home by sealing off basements from seepage and create good barriers around your house. They have even invented devices that capture the water before it comes near your home. If a flood is likely in your area listen to your local news to be better prepared. Turn off the main breaker box to all electricity. If the warning is given to evacuate please do not wait. Also, be careful moving through water. The current of the water can cause you to fall. Carry a stick to find solid ground as you walk through it. A lot of people try to flee thinking they can escape the water but end up caught in a dangerous situation. There are many ways you can prepare for flooding. Flooding can be devastating not only from loss of material possessions but loss of life. Practice every safety method possible to take on a flood. SERVPRO of Paris provides help in flooding. We are always here to help.

How fire loss effects people and families

1/18/2017 (Permalink)

Residential fires can cause a significant amount of stress. Not only do people lose their homes, they lose things that mean a lot to them. Our homes provide us with shelter, comfort, and all around security. The things in our homes are usually completely lost or somewhat affected. This causes emotional distress and a hand full of other feelings. Children are also filled with a sense of loss. When parents or caregivers are under stress the whole family becomes overwhelmed. Some fires also cause physical injury and even death. You can become permanently disabled. This may mean you are not able to work at all. There are several stages of recovering from a major loss. Find a good support system. Family, friends, and neighbors. You can also be a great support for someone experiencing a loss. Fires can be small but not all fire calls are. Eventually you pick up the pieces and try to move forward. Always remember that a house is a home and losing it and the things you need can be very hard. Healing takes time.
